Today we have a post about a little field trip to our friend Katie’s nest to help with some pillow-arranging madness! You all know how Lisa feels about throw pillows (read here for more) being able to transform a room. Well here is another example! Katie has a matching couch and love seat in a tan color, and a brown leather chair, and they are just crying out for some pillows! Up against the neutral-colored wall, the couches, while they look comfy, could use a shot of color and pattern. Here is a before picture of the empty tan couches and the leather chair.
Katie wanted to add mostly navy blue pillows, as tan and navy together is a classic color combination. But beyond that, the contrast of the dark blue color against the neutral background adds the punctuation that these seating arrangements needed. The saturated color palette of the beautiful rug in the room was also a source of inspiration. Another accent color was needed to round out the color scheme of the pillows, but since the red of the rug is pretty dominant in the room, Katie wanted to steer clear of adding more red. But there is a lovely, calming pale greenish-blue woven throughout the rug pattern that pairs nicely with the navy, and to which Katie felt drawn, so that was the natural additional accent color choice. Finally the pillows all had white in the prints as well to bring a crisp brightness to the other colors.
Katie ordered a plethora of pillows so we would have options from which we could create perfect combo, and we had a great time playing with different arrangements until we got it right. It was all about striking a balance of patterns and colors, without necessarily making it symmetrical. And here is the final result–looking good!
Katie had to order all the pillows online as we don’t have a ton of places to shop for home decor in our area. It can be a little tricky to order home decor online as the colors and textures don’t always come across on screen, and unfortunately some of the pillows (which are not shown) didn’t play well with the others and needed to be returned. A word of warning–read the return policies before you order, as some pillows were subject to restocking fees. If you also don’t have a lot of home decor stores in your area, another option is to take a field trip to a fabric store–but you have to be willing to take all the steps of choosing and obtaining the fabric and then having the pillows made. While it can be worth the extra work to get the perfect pillows, those services are often in high demand, pricey, and take extra time. If you choose the less complicated route of internet shopping, just read the fine print about returns! But enough about return policies and on to more pillow pics!
Remember that leather chair? The tobacco brown leather combined with the substantial shape of the chair definitely gives it a very masculine feel, and it needed a bit of a feminine touch to bring it into balance. That was achieved with the addition of just one navy and white pillow in a more feminine polka dot print, and now it looks so much fresher. What an easy accessory!
Here is the final, harmonious arrangement of pillows on the couch. A little pillow magic and poof, Katie’s seating is now fabulous! The Brick Nests’ pillow squad to the rescue!
